Whole Part Whole Model (video)
In this week’s Q & A video, Angela discusses the ‘Whole Part Whole’ Model.
Many schools adopt a ‘whole-part-whole’ approach for classroom literacy instruction. Not only does this support the gradual release of responsibility model, but it also provides a clear framework for focused teaching episodes.
When adopted by schools, this framework ensures a consistent whole-school approach is embedded across all year levels. Whole class explicit teaching, focused differentiation and coaching, and descriptive feedback with student reflection is provided for students of all ages.
There are many common labels for the model and at times the different terms may cause confusion … literacy block, reading or writing block, English block, café model, readers’ workshop and writers’ workshop are just a sampling. It is important to note that individual labels are less important than the application of the actual framework.
It is the framework and not what it is called which makes the difference. All programs of quality move students from high quality demonstration through to a level of mastery; all quality programs are informed by classroom data alongside the broader holistic student data; all quality programs are outcome-driven and implemented with specificity and rigor, regardless of which part of the gradual release model the learning is positioned.
The whole-part-whole model provides a blueprint for weekly and daily instruction … this blueprint supports teachers to plan and schedule meaningful, relevant lessons for all students.
